India’s expanding maritime footprint in the Indo-Pacific

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s July 2026 visits to Indonesia and Australia were more than a diplomatic itinerary across the eastern Indian Ocean and the Pacific. They represented a carefully calibrated statement of India’s strategic intent in the Indo-Pacific—a region that today accounts for nearly 65% of the world’s population, around 63% of global GDP, and over half of global maritime trade.
